Value/Principle: Trust “Move at the speed of trust when working on assignments or events. If you trust people, they will become trustworthy.” - Adrienne Marie Brown
Value/Principle: Honor the margins Intentionally recognizing, valuing, and creating space for those who share marginalized backgrounds. Since this type of prioritization practices consideration of many different power dynamics (race, gender, hierarchy, ability, etc), it is the individual's responsibility who holds power to practice.
Value/Principle: Harm reduction Strategy that aims to minimize harm to others. Requires communicating respectfully and in a way that considers the wellbeing of others. Addressing systemic racism is inherently challenging and we may cause unintentional harm. Harm reduction practices consider the ways our behaviors, attitudes, language, beliefs, etc. may cause additional harm to marginalized individuals and aim to reduce that impact.
Value/Principle: Impact >> Intention We may not mean to cause harm, but as imperfect beings, we will. Accepting our imperfection and the harm we’ve caused, we center the importance of the impact we had on someone else. We have to acknowledge and center the impact we have on others for them to feel safe and seen- this is a universal human experience.
Value/Principle: Accountability Owning our past and current behaviors, beliefs, language, feelings, etc. Owning our impact on others. Following through on our commitments or communicating our limitations.
Value/Principle: Gadugi (Cherokee) Working together for the common good
